I kind of want to see a dystopian post-apoc YA novel or film where the protagonist escapes at the end, only to discover that the “apocalypse” was a localised phenomenon, the rest of the world is perfectly fine, and everybody has just agreed to quietly ignore Crazy Dystopia Land.
(For bonus points, have this happen at the end of the first installment, and the follow-up is a low-key character study about the protagonist’s struggle to adjust to normal life and deal with the fact that, to the rest of the world, the genocidal dictator who had her family set on fire is a wacky Internet meme.)
The worst thing about this post is that within literally ten minutes of submitting it, I got multiple asks wanting to know which real-world country I was referring to, because there’s more than one that precisely fits this scenario - right down to the “bloodthirsty dictator who the rest of the world treats as a wacky meme” part.
